It is true, to many they sound better just cause they are louder to many, but this is not always true as has been stated, I have a sub-standard input active bass that sounds really weak without boosting settings, ironically, my Fender P is way too loud for a passive bass! lol. My bass has both modes and the active mode is clearer. Passive is a bit warmer. Maybe it’s my bass in particular, but I feel I have better attack with my passive pickups. I can get some room shaking bottom with my actives, but I can’t play anything fast. I would personally recommend one of the passive G&L's to stock with flats.
